Bring Instant Runoff Voting to Denver
We call upon our elected representatives in Denver to put Instant Runoff Voting on the 2026 November ballot.
Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) is a method of voting that allows voters to vote their values. (It's also called Ranked Choice Voting.) Vote for who you love and rank those you like – or can live with – as back-up in case there is an instant runoff.
Instant Runoff Voting requires only one election, which will save Denver millions of dollars. Runoffs are expensive and have much lower voter turnout.
Right now, our system often forces voters to choose between the "lesser of two evils" instead of candidates we genuinely support. IRV encourages candidates also to compete for second-choice support from their opponents’ supporters, which lessens the incentive to run negative campaigns.
Ranked Choice Voting is already being done in several Colorado cities including Boulder, Broomfield, Ft. Collins, and it will likely be on the ballot in Longmont this year.
With each election cycle, the benefits of ranked choice voting become clearer: greater voter empowerment, better candidate selection, more civil discourse, and a stronger, more inclusive democracy.
Let’s make sure every vote counts!
